NaNo Nadir

Vissi D'arte from Tosca by Puccini

I remember the NaNo Nadir from last year and I’ve hit it again.  It appears that for the inexperienced author, it is not possible to legislate for the NaNo Nadir.  This is where I feel as though I have a strong beginning and have managed to create some intrigue.  I also have a clear idea of how the tale will end, and there’s a nice twist in it.  But to get there, I need to write about another 15,000 words and I feel as though I’m spinning it out to get there.  I’ve just written a whole chapter about a train journey across the Tyrol and it is immensely boring.  How does William Boyd manage to generate such interest and tension with someone getting a tray of sugar almonds from one room to the next?  NaNo is terrific fun, but it does make you think twice about saying “I could do better than that” because “doing better than that” is actually bloody difficult …
