When the opera house re-opens under the Nazis, all the frivolous jolly stuff is out and all the heavy Teutonic stuff is in. Salome by Richard Strauss (no relation) was a firm favourite, although I doubt that the stars were a patch on Stratford Johns and Glenda Jackson, as in this interpretation from Ken Russell.
